Reinstatement Advising FAQ
When are the reinstatement petitions due?
Reinstatement petitions are due by 12 p.m. the day before the committee meets.
Where do I turn in a completed reinstatement petition?
You can turn in the completed reinstatement petition to Joslin Boroughs in Mary Gates Hall, Suite 141 or email it to her at joslinb@uw.edu
What do I need to include along with the students completed petition?
Please include a printed copy of the student's transcript along with a printed version of the EARS or Compass notes for that student. If you don't feel comfortable writing notes in EARS or Compass for the student, you are also welcome to write a letter.
What should I include in the notes or letter that are turned in with the student's petition?
Please document the interactions you have had with the student. This is very important as it helps the committee see the student's planning process and willingness to prepare for their return to UW. Please include relevant conversations about the students preparations for returning, along with how the student plans to address the issues that lead to their drop status. It is also helpful to note any recommendations you have given the student.
I am a departmental adviser, can I complete a reinstatement petition with a student?
Absolutely.
Should a student only meet with one adviser about their reinstatement?
Not necessarily. In many cases, it is helpful for students to meet with both their general adviser and one or more departmental adviser (from their intended departments). This ensures that the student has thought through their course plan(s) and is properly preparing for their intended major and/or they understand that they need to have another option given the likelihood of admittance to their intended major.
How do I know if my student is reinstated?
You will be cc'd on the emailed reinstatement notification that is sent to your student.
How do I learn more about how to support a student through the reinstatement process?
Please feel free to reach out to any of the reinstatement committee members with questions or to set up a time to review the process.
Returning Students and Reinstatement
Students who have had their reinstatement petitions approved after the returning student reenrollment deadline for the quarter in which they are seeking to resume their studies at UW has passed should have their adviser email petition@uw.edu with the student’s name and email address so that the link to the late returning student re-enrollment form can be sent to the student.
When submitting these requests, advisers should ensure that the student this link is being sent to does not have any registration or transcript holds on their account (ie. SFS, Library, Hall Health), as our office is unable to process a returning student submission if any holds exist on the record, even only those blocking the ordering of transcripts.
